Andrew Stephen Hasenstaub Feb 21, 1951 -Dec 19, 2023
Longtime Alaska resident Andrew Hasenstaub, 72, died on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2023, at his home in Anchorage, Alaska.
An adventurous young man, Andy was drawn to Alaska in 1973 to work on the trans-Alaska pipeline, married in 1978, and raised two children. His son and daughter were his pride and joy. He loved sharing news of their amazing accomplishments, all the while humbly claiming he had "nothing to do with how they turned out." He was a true gentleman, kind and generous with his time, known for his easy smile and humor, and a master woodworker, building the outdoor chapels, sweat lodge and beautiful custom furniture for Alaska Children's Services, now AK Child & Family. He enjoyed giving handmade gifts and golfing, and he was a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Browns and Indians, refusing to call them by their new name, the Guardians.
Andy worked many jobs during his life, including stints on the pipeline and on a fishing boat. Starting in 1989, he worked for Alaska Childrens' Services, AK Child & Family for 27 years, and in 2016, went on to a second career as volunteer and employee of the Alaska Zoo.
Andy was preceded in death by his wife, Vickie Groom Hasenstaub; father, Joseph Hasenstaub; and brother, John Hasenstaub. He is survived by his daughter, Andrea; and son, Daniel; mother, Frances Hasenstaub; siblings, Diane Beargie and Ted, Tom, Marty, and Joe Hasenstaub; and his beloved dog, Captain.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2023, at 1 p.m., at Kehl's Legacy Chapel, 11621 Old Seward Hwy, Anchorage, AK 99515.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alaska Zoo or AK Child & Family.
