In Memoriam
Below is the death notice of Coach David "Dave" Holian. Please keep the Holian family in your prayers.
COACH DAVE HOLIAN, age 74, Beloved husband of 52 years to Mary K. (nee McAnallen). Loving father of Dan Holian and Heather Holian. Dear Pappap to Connor and Zachary Starowesky. Brother to Mark (Theresa), Betty Rowe (Jim), Bob (Mary), and Mike (Eva) Holian. Son of the late Vincent and Elizabeth (nee Slater) Holian. Loving uncle and great uncle.
At The University of Akron, Dave was a four-year starter and senior captain of the football team and a two-year letterman on the wrestling team. Dave and Mary met at the Student Union and their fairytale began. Dave graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and a minor in earth science. After graduation, Dave started what would become his life’s work as a teacher and coach at St. Edward High School. In 1990, after a short break from teaching, Dave joined the Lake Catholic Community where he continued his love of teaching and coaching football and wrestling. Dave’s lasting impression on students and athletes spans decades; he couldn’t go anywhere without being recognized and greeted with a handshake or a bearhug.
After he retired from teaching, Dave continued volunteering his time as a coach and mentor to the young men of St. Ed’s and Bay Village high school where he especially loved coaching his grandson Zach. For the past decade or so, Dave has rediscovered his passion for carpentry through volunteering at the Bay Village Wood Shop where he helped work on community projects and individual projects.
Dave had a deep, enduring faith and love for his family and friends. His wonderful booming laugh and smile that shone brighter than the sun will be missed dearly by all. His family will remember how he always, always put his finger in the icing of every cake at every celebration.
Dave died doing what he loved and passed surrounded by his loving and devoted family on Tuesday, March 28, 2023. Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 11th at St. Raphael Church, 525 Dover Center Road, Bay Village. PLEASE MEET AT THE CHURCH. Mass WILL BE LIVESTREAMED @ http://tiny.cc/dholian.
