Below is the death notice of Fr. Thomas Montavon, former St. Edward High School faculty member. Please keep the Montavon family in your prayers.
Fr. Thomas G. Montavon died Thursday, 4 January 2024, after having received the prayerful support and consolation of the Sacraments.
Thomas G. Montavon was born on 10 September 1935. His parents were the late Paul and Mary Elizabeth (McCormick). He was educated at St. Martha Elementary, Akron, St. Mary High School, Akron, St. Charles College, Catonsville, Maryland, Borromeo Seminary, Wickliffe, St. Mary Seminary, Cleveland. On 20 May 1961 in the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, Bishop L. Floyd Begin ordained him to the priesthood for the service of the Diocese of Cleveland.
Father Montavon's first assignment was as Parochial Vicar of St. Albert the Great, North Royalton. On 9 June 1966 he was assigned Parochial Vicar of St. Clement, Lakewood. During this assignment, Fr. Montavon also taught religion at St. Edward High School, Lakewood effective 30 August 1968. Fr. Montavon was transferred on 17 June 1970 to serve the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, Cleveland as Parochial Vicar. During this assignment he also served as the Diocesan Director of Holy Name Society Union from 15 August 1971 until 1 March 1972. On 12 August 1976 Fr. Montavon was assigned Parochial Vicar of St. Thomas More, Brooklyn. Fr. Montavon was transferred on 21 December 1976 to serve as Parochial Vicar of St. Augustine, Barberton. On 1 July 1977 he was named Pastor of St. Colette, Brunswick where he was the founding pastor and brought life to the plan for a new parish in Brunswick. During this assignment he served as Board of Trustees' member of Catholic Cemeteries Association March 1983-1998. Fr. Montavon also served as Chaplain of Knights of Columbus, Brunswick Council # 4847 effective 9 October 1983. On 13 July 1988 he was assigned Chaplain of Knights of Columbus #1766. Fr. Montavon retired on 20 February 2007.
He is preceded in death by his siblings Paul (Stella Stansky), John (Nadine Rogers), Sr. Mary Ann HM and Robert (Carolyn Bussan). He is survived by many nieces and nephews. The wake will be held on Friday, January 12 from 9:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. in St. Colette Church, 330 W. 130th Street, Brunswick, OH 44212. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Bishop Martin J. Amos will be the main celebrant and Father Timothy Gareau will be the homilist. Interment All Saints Cemetery, Northfield. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Colette Parish.
