Below is the death notice of George Sammon, Class of 1960. Brother of the late Thomas Sammon, Class of 1955. Please keep the Sammon family in your prayers.

George Patrick Sammon, (81), of Berea, Ohio died peacefully on October 10th, 2023, surrounded by family.

George, fondly known as “Papa,” was born to Thomas Edgar and Mary Agnes Sammon (both deceased), on April 27th, 1942 in Lakewood, Ohio. He enjoyed playing the trombone and was the band captain at St. Edward’s High School winning the National Marching Band Competition. In addition to marching bands, he loved bagpiper marches at Celtic games. His favorite musicians included Louis Armstrong, Johnny Cash and anyone Irish. His love of animals (his beloved Cotton & Penny) and nature followed him to California and then back to Lakewood and Berea. His favorite sports teams: the Indians, Browns, 49ers, SF Giants and he had a special place in his heart for Notre Dame Football. He also enjoyed playing tennis and the competition with his lifelong best friend, Michael Stringer. After graduating from St. Edward University in Austin, Texas he embarked on a successful career as a finance and investment executive across a number of companies in Ohio and California.

George loved to spend time with his family in his “Favorite Place on Earth,” Yosemite, climbing Half Dome and Glacier Point. He had a passion for photography, genealogy and history with a keen interest in the Civil War, ghost towns and the old west.

George is survived by his wife, Phyliss. He is survived by his children from his previous marriage to Mary Ann (nee Boehnlein), George Patrick Sammon, Jr. (Debra), Michele Therese Hanak (Kirk), Mary Kathleen Story, Timothy Edgar Sammon (Krista), Maureen Lenore Bradshaw (Mat). He is survived by his stepdaughter, Michele Lee Nicholas. George is also survived by his granddaughters, Amanda Adair (Michael), Megan Merlo (Brian), Ramona Adair (Jose), Erin Sammon and Hannah Bradshaw; and by his grandsons, George Sammon III, David Sammon, Ryan Davis (Marissa), Evan Bradshaw and Parker Nicholas.

George is preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Edgar Sammon, Jr. and is survived by his sisters, Maryann S. Picard (Bill, deceased) and Jane M. Johnstone (Gregg). He is also survived by his many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.

George’s family will host a Celebration of Life on Friday, October 20th 2023, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at McGorray-Hanna Funeral Home in Lakewood (14133 Detroit Ave.), with a private burial on Saturday, October 21st at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St. Edward High School in Lakewood or Cleveland Area Animal Shelters in George’s memory.
